WHERE IT STARTED

Imagine a custodian bumps into a school bus operator and traps himself in a lifelong coalition. This was the case for Daniel who shares familiar social challenges with Notoya – in employment opportunities, healthcare, and education, to name a few. The couple’s humble beginnings, in Sierra Leone and Jamaica respectively, cultivate their passion to overcome adversity. In 2013, Notoya a licensed cosmetologist battled mental health – an encounter she now uses to strengthen individuals facing similar challenges. Daniel’s decade long employment with the Christian Assisted Living for Mentally Retarded Adults, Inc. (CALMRA Inc.) echoes his familiarity with mental wellness. In 2017, the couple facilitated the launching of CHANCE-2 Mental Wellness & Recovery Hub Jamaica Foundation.

During the early to late 2000s, Daniel and Notoya served as Elders and ordained Deacons of their local church. Their growing commitment to service touched many lives, including two Nursing Home facilities in Laurel, Maryland. They currently own and operate a small heating and cooling business – an empowerment hub for education and career development. Through their leadership at Dankays Outreach Missions, Mr. and Mrs. Bangura presently sponsor three schools in Sierra Leone, about fifteen hundred students in total.  The Banguras believe the grace of God, support of their children – Adina, Anida, Adnia, Aidan – volunteers, and donors make serving together like a dream come true.

HOW IT HAPPENED

DANKAYS is a double-barreled name founded in 2010 by Daniel and Notoya Bangura. It is a combination of Daniel and Kadian, Notoya’s middle name. It was coined when their US-based Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) business was established. By mid to late 2014 it became a household name known for providing complimentary HVAC tutoring to minority individuals. The company expresses it values by providing discounted and sometimes free HVAC services to clients who could not always afford to pay. As a result, an attitude of social responsibility redefined DANKAYS as an outreach mission geared towards assisting the needy.

Daniel, and his wife Notoya, envisioned that identifying with individuals who benefit society is a civic duty. In 2017, the Banguras went beyond boarders to help facilitate and launch CHANCE-2 Mental Wellness & Recovery Hub, Jamaica Foundation. In the years following, Mr. and Mrs. Bangura started promoting initiatives in healthcare, education, sanitation, housing, employment, and disability, specifically for less fortunate communities in Sierra Leone. The culmination of their journey came full circle on May 11, 2021, when DANKAYS OUTREACH MISSIONS was born. During the COVID-19 era, Daniel and Notoya joined forces with volunteers and donors to deliver aid and foster their initiatives. Consequently, the corporate image of DANKAYS evolved from making clients comfortable in their homes to “Delivering Assistance Needed Knowing Adversity Yearns Support.”

WHAT MOTIVATES US

Nothing can be more devastating than to learn that a newborn died due to poor medical care. That was the case for an infant whom Notoya my wife and I met the day after Christmas 2019. He was with his parents when we held him with our own hands on our way to my father’s remote village called Mahefeh in Kambia District, Sierra Leone, West Africa. Our four children were with us, accompanied by my sister, cousin, and driver. Packed like sardines in a 2004 Honda Odyssey made Kambia roads like a roller coaster. Our eight-passenger vehicle was unfit to carry its 1,500 lbs passengers with luggage while constantly navigating potholes. The obstacles along our journey were like nothing short of daily life experiences for less fortunate individuals.

Passing through nearby villages opened our eyes to the constraints of local residents, which minimized the severity of our vehicle challenges. The villagers seem accustomed to seeing one vehicle drive by about every 45 minutes; two or at most three motorcycles pass by every 15 minutes. Men, women and children frequently travel on foot with loads that seem too heavy to carry. That’s when we met the helpless couple and their newborn sitting along a dusty roadside. Carrying his son in one hand, the father squeezed a small plastic bag of water into his wife’s mouth to save her from dehydration and childbirth pain. We stopped, reached for our first-aid kit, and asked for permission to administer medication to the exhausted mother. With the help of other travelers, the mother gets another chance to life. Sadly, few months later her newborn reportedly passed away due to malaria. The tragedy dived us into an intrinsic motivation to deliver assistance in the face of adversity.
